Games for Windows Live: Future & Status

To whom it may concern:

This is a friendly reminder to the community that Microsoft's Games for Windows Live service ("GfWL") will be permanently shutdown on July 1st, 2014. While this has officially been known since around August of 2013, some people have yet to hear of it, so know you know.

It is unclear as to the precise process that Microsoft will take (whether games that fully rely on the service will be fully-functional, etc) thus it is highly recommended you make a backup of any and all save game data that you have on your local hard drive for all games you own that use GfWL.

Due to these unforseen circumstances (which were not known by myself until recently), the final release of Service Database 14 will be delayed likely until after the scheduled GfWL shutdown date. This will allow for further understanding in how online mechanics and technicalities will function as a whole and will thus allow for final tweaking before the final release of Service Database 14.

To clarify, no further official information is known - by the New Team of Weapons and Tactics - at this time. You may search other popular websites for further data, however we cannot confirm the legitimacy of anything outside the scope as was discussed here.

Re: NOTICE: Games for Windows Live Shutdown - July 2014

[center:3upfvct3]UPDATE: June 23, 2014

Games for Windows Live NOT Shutting Down[/center:3upfvct3]

This is a short announcement that the allegations of Games for Windows Live have been recently refuted by Microsoft, in a statement to GameInformer:

[center:3upfvct3]

We are continuing to support the Games for Windows Live service. As previously announced, as part of the retirement of Microsoft Points the Xbox.com PC marketplace was closed. Although customers are unable to purchase new games from the marketplace or receive title updates, they can continue to enjoy previously purchased content by downloading them through the Games for Windows Live client as usual. We remain committed to investing in PC gaming in the years ahead, and look forward to sharing more in the future.

In summary, Games for Windows Live will not be shutting down this July. It is, however, unknown what the future is for Games for Windows Live, so we can only hope that games on it have a plan in case they do shutdown. According to many sources, Games for Windows Live is one of the most loathed services by many PC gamers to date and its support is on the decline: points were already deprecated and no new games can be purchased through the store, so there's no telling how long exactly this is going to last. That said, it does seem more news is planned later in the summer, by Microsoft.
